Walter Bland
Piano

Walter Bland was born into a family of artists in Springfield, Massachusetts. He began playing the piano at the age of 7 after seeing the Disney movie “Fantasia," and this early experience impacted him so greatly that he has not stopped playing since! Walter credits his high school teacher Fred Kerr with introducing him to playing jazz and guiding him toward finding his calling as a musician. Fred taught Walter 12 tone music and the beginning of composition, and it was through his influence that Walter chose to focus on jazz piano during his formal musical education.

Walter studied music at the Springfield Conservatory of Music as well as the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. As an undergraduate, Walter was introduced to the music of many cultures and met musicians from all around the world. Walter recalls that one of his strongest teaching influences at Berklee was a bassist named Major Holley, who inspired him to compose for the student ensemble. Major Holley, a great bassist, played and recorded with Art Tatum, Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson and was the featured bassist on the Gula Matari Quincy Jones CD in which he takes on an Arco bass solo while he scats.

Walter began teaching piano because he realized the importance of keeping musical traditions and foundations alive in this age of technology. He believe that musicians like himself, who are fortunate to have studied with masters, should continue to share what they have learned with others. Walter enjoys working with students of all ages and skill levels. His past teaching experience varies from private lessons, to Montessori school classrooms, to summer music camps and young artist programs. He loves helping each of his students to find his or her voice in their music because each one of them is wonderfully unique! He also specializes in composition and teaches students how to write arrangements for orchestration.
