Sebastian Poorman has wanted to be a musician since he can remember. As a child he always felt the need to listen to music, sing or play. When Sebastian was 10, he went to a Rufus Wainwright concert. Rufus sang with such beauty, in English and French. After this, Sebastian told himself that this was what he wanted to do with his life and to make people feel the beauty of music.
In junior high and high school, Sebastian pursued singing as his main passion. He took choir starting in 7th grade, competed in All-State, sang in every choir possible including the Children’s Choir of Greater Dallas. He also attended summer school starting in 7th grade at UNT, All-State camps at TCU and UT and at the Eastman School of Music.
Sebastian was accepted at several music schools and decided to attend SMU for 4 ½ years. He was named a Meadows Artistic Scholar and studied with a renown vocalist for a number of years. During his time in school, he was in the Meadows Chamber Singers, Southern Gentlemen, a male acapella choir, and Hilltop Singers, the official acapella choir of SMU. He attended Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy for six weeks in Summer 2022.
During his time at SMU, Sebastian also developed a passion for wanting to teach, as he really enjoys demonstrating his passion to others. He is knowledgeable in diction, theory and can help advise students on how to better their vocal skills.
His goal is to encourage people to do the best they can as a singer, while also being able to strengthen their ability to be ready for a possible career in music. He hopes that at the end, the students can gain great knowledge and insight into how music theory, music ear training, singing and performing works.
